Chinese New Year may be celebrated by ethnic Chinese all over the world. Festivities have evolved to take on their own unique aspects in different regions. In Singapore, the Chingay is a lavish parade with thousand of participants from as far away as Mexico and France. Slices of preserved pork named “bak kwa” are a luxury treat reserved for guests (in Singapore version, they are grilled over charcoal) and pineapple tarts are offered to the stream of visitors many Chinese Singaporean homes receive during this period. The Galapagos Islands are one of the most outstanding natural treasures on earth. There, giant tortoises are the oldest living creatures on the planet, with a lifespan of over 100 years. The waters of Galapagos support a diverse population of marine life too including multiple species of rays and sharks. Among them is the gentle whale shark, the largest fish of the world.
